John Cena and Wife: It’s Over!

John Cena will soon be free to pile drive any woman he wants… if you know what we mean!

The WWE Superstar has filed for divorce from his wife of three years, Liz Huberdeau. In the documents, Cena says the marriage is “irretrievably broken.”

John Cena Picture

The couple signed a prenuptial agreement in 2009, TMZ reports, but Liz has hired the same attorney (Raymond Rafool) used by Linda Hogan when she recently fleeced Hulk Hogan after their union dissolved.

“Although it is indeed unfortunate that John Cena decided to divorce his high school sweetheart Liz Cena; particularly, after they have come so far in their lives and in his career together, Liz will and really has no choice but to pursue all of her rights and entitlements,” Rafool said in a statement. “Sadly, divorce is not the way Liz thought her perfect love story would end.”

Blah… blah. Whatever. Here is the important question: John Cena, would you hit it?

Eminem Puts ‘Southpaw’ Flick On Back Burner

‘He’s focusing on his music right now,’ a rep for Detroit MC confirms of delay on boxing movie.
By Rob Markman

It’s been almost 10 years since fans saw Eminem in his first big-time movie role, but they’ll have to wait a little bit longer to catch him the second time around.

The rapper has long been signed on to star in “Southpaw,” a gritty drama about a boxer who tries to mount a comeback in life and in the ring, but it is now being reported that Em will put the flick on the backburner.

“He’s focusing on his music right now, so while he’s doing that, while he’s in that space, he wanted to put this on hold for the time being,” Eminem’s rep Dennis Dennehy told the Detroit Free Press this week.

In November Em’s “8 Mile” will turn 10 years old. The film was both a commercial and critical success, and while Marshall has gone on to make cameos in 2009′s “Funny People” and on the wildly popular HBO series “Entourage,” he has yet to return to the big or small screen as a leading man.

The film’s original distributor, DreamWorks, shelved the boxing project last August, but in October it was reported that Sony Pictures had picked up the flick, which will be made by MGM and directed by Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day,” “Brooklyn’s Finest”).

The good news is that when the Recovery rapper is ready to dive into production, he won’t have to travel far from his native Detroit to do it. “What I’m told is when the film does get made, the plan is that the bulk of it will be shot in Michigan. That was always the understanding,” said Dennehy.

Are you looking forward to seeing Eminem on the big screen again? Tell us in the comments!

Lady Gaga Under Fire After ‘PopStarsDontEat’ Comment

Pop star’s post-workout tweet criticized by eating-disorder association.
By John Mitchell

<P>What was clearly intended as a jokey tweet lamenting the rigorous diet and exercise routine she is currently undertaking to prepare for her 110-date Born This Way Ball has put <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml "> Lady Gaga</a> in the crosshairs of some angry fans and eating-disorder organizations. On Tuesday, the pop star <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/189809689570189313" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "Just killed back to back spin classes. Eating a salad dreaming of a cheeseburger #PopSingersDontEat #IWasBornThisWay." <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/11/popstarsdonteat-lady-gaga_n_1418722.html" target="_blank">Some fans </a> thought the tweet wasn't exactly keeping with the pop star's "You're perfect the way you are" message and that her choice of the "#PopStarsDontEat" hashtag could be misinterpreted as encouraging eating disorders because she posits herself as a role model to her fans.</P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> The National Eating Disorder Association even weighed in, hitting its own <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/NEDAstaff/status/190133464509591552" target="_blank">Twitter account</a> to write, "Huh? This is the same person who recently implored girls to stop dieting?"</P><P><b><i><a href="http://buzzworthy.mtv.com/2012/04/11/lady-gaga-pop-stars-dont-eat-tweet/">MTV Buzzworthy has an Open Letter To Lady Gaga</a></b></i> While it seems clear that Gaga was joking &#8212; who hasn't dove into a salad wishing it was something else? &#8212; the comment does appear out of character for the star, who has spoken publicly about her own struggles with an eating disorder as a teen. Using that particular hashtag might have been a poor choice, but it's safe to say Lady Gaga wasn't knowingly making light of eating disorders &#8212; and, otherwise, wasn't she mostly just encouraging exercise and healthy eating? Gaga tweets often about all sort of less-than-healthful habits, from <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/185590893238165506" target="_blank">drinking </a> ("after 12 margaritas my phone was confiscated") to, well, <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/189573069856194560" target="_blank">other things </a> ("princess xena of xanaxland has lil secrets in her inbox"). Why she is being scrutinized for making an observation about something we already know &#8212; that celebrities engage in intense fitness regimens to meet the unrealistic expectations placed on their appearance &#8212; is kind of a mystery. But, you know, totally appropriate and necessary reason for outrage, everyone. <i>Sound off on Gaga's #PopSingersDontEat tweet in the comments below!</i></p>

President Obama Announces Support For Gay Marriage

President Barack Obama today became the first sitting president to announce support for same-sex marriage, making his position on the subject clear.

In a sit-down interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts, Obama completed what has been a long and often dubious “evolution” on the controversial topic.

“I’ve always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly,” Obama told Roberts in an interview that will air Thursday.

President Obama Photo

Obama’s announcement, on the heels of North Carolina’s Amendment 1 ban on gay marriage in that state, was made after much soul-searching.

“Over the course of several years, I have talked to friends and family and neighbors, and I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together,” he said.

“When I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”

The statement constitutes an act of political bravery on the president’s behalf, as 29 states have now banned gay marriage constitutionally.

It’s also a major victory for the gay rights community, which has been pushing him to declare his support for marriage equality for years.

Just last Sunday, Vice President Joseph Biden told NBC’s Meet The Press that he was personally comfortable with same-sex marriage.

With the issue back in the news, the pressure on Obama intensified.

The White House originally insisted over the weekend that Biden clarified his statement as being in reference to civil rights for gay couples.

But the explanation was largely dismissed as a political dodge, a way for Obama to support for marriage equality without having to declare it himself.

No longer.

The president finally chose to speak out Wednesday in the wake of the North Carolina ban, with the White House hastily scheduling an interview.

“It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” the president said. “You know when I go to college campuses, sometimes I talk to college Republicans who think that I have terrible policies on the economy, on foreign policy, but are very clear that when it comes to same sex equality or, you know, believe in equality.”

“They are much more comfortable with it. You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents and Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently.”

“It doesn’t make sense to them and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

The president’s support of same-sex marriage will have little political impact, at least from a practical standpoint, as most states have tackled the issue legislatively and/or judicially, outside the realm of the federal government.

Symbolically, the impact is much more profound.

As the first president to support marriage equality, he sets the bar for its social and political acceptance and retains the ability to shape public opinion further.

Charlize Theron Enjoyed ‘Screaming at People’ In ‘Snow White’

‘I screamed so much at people, I tore a stomach muscle,’ she says during ‘MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman.’

If there is one thing you should have learned while watching “MTV First: Snow White and the Huntsman” on Tuesday night, it’s that Oscar-winning thespian Charlize Theron is not only extremely talented and beautiful, but she just seems like a lot of fun, no matter what she’s doing or talking about.

Case in point: When Theron was posed a question via Twitter about how much fun she had “diva-ing out” and playing “a bitch for a change,” via her role as Evil Queen Ravenna in “Snow White and the Huntsman.”

“What do you mean, ‘for a change’?” she joked. “God, yeah. That’s the tricky thing of the movie: Finding that line that you can walk where you’re not going into camp-ville and you’re also not going into ‘please take me serious Marlon Brando acting-ville.’ I did enjoy just screaming at people,” Theron admitted. “I screamed so much at people, I tore a stomach muscle, which I had never heard of that before.

“And then off-set, you can joke about it, because you’re in these costumes. I felt like I was being so high-maintenance: ‘It hurts, oh gosh, I can’t walk to craft service,’ ” she fake-whined. “You become a big pain in the ass. I mean, I’m saying it was the costume. but it really wasn’t. That’s how I behaved.”

In addition to channeling her inner diva, Theron said she enjoyed exploring the fantastical elements involved in making a fairy tale.

“Of course you have this luxury to then throw back to the fairy tale,” she said. “It’s really huge in scale. This film is epic and big and the characters, what we tried to do was ground it and give it weight and reality, but there is a small part of this film that has to celebrate the fantastical of it.”

Watch Kristen Stewart And Charlize Theron Face Off In ‘Snow White’ Video!

‘MTV First’ shares exclusive preview of epic showdown.

An exclusive, never-before-seen clip from the upcoming film “Snow White and the Huntsman” kicked off “MTV First” by teasing an epic showdown between Kristen Stewart‘s titular princess and Charlize Theron‘s Evil Queen Ravenna.

As thrilling as the sneak preview might have been, it left fans dying to know what happens when the two enemies finally do square off when the film hits theaters June 1.

The clip does give a little more insight into the beef between Ravenna and Snow White: Obviously, the Queen wants to be fairest of them all, but the death of Snow White’s father certainly adds an emotional element to the bout. In the scene, we learn that the Queen is responsible.

When MTV News’ Josh Horowitz spoke with Theron at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards in January, the Academy Award-winning actress seemed impressed with her co-stars fighting spirit. “She was a good fight,” Theron shared. “The bitch brought it!”

Even though Theron was able to put up a fight against Stewart, she was no match for her unwieldy costumes, which might have done more damage.

“The costumes were more damaging than the actual fight sequences,” she explained. “I was way more bruised from my costume than I was from [fighting]. Doing a fight sequence in your sweatpants is different than wearing an 80-pound steel thing.”

At the very least, Theron could commiserate with her co-star. “[Stewart] was in full metal, I was in full metal, just getting down, it took us four hours,” Theron said.

Who Was Sacha Baron Cohen’s Original Oscars-Night Target?

Ryan Seacrest is a very good sport — which the world witnessed on Oscars night when The Dictator, a.k.a. Sacha Baron Cohen, spilled an urn full of ashes on the TV personality. But the E! News host finally got to the bottom of why the role-playing comedian chose him to prank that night.

Michael Jackson To Appear On Pepsi Cans

More than one billion cans will be imprinted with the late pop icon’s image.

A representative for the estate said the PepsiCo campaign is the first branding deal executed since Jackson died in 2009 at the age of 50.</P><P>While Jackson was handsomely paid in the 1984 deal, it was during the filming of an ad for that sponsorship that his life was forever altered. Kristen Stewart Makes ‘After Hours’ Debut In ‘The Yes/No Show’

‘MTV First: Snow White & the Huntsman’ debuts new clip and cast interview Tuesday night at 7:56 p.m. on MTV and MTV.com.
By Josh Horowitz

At a time when it seems like virtually every movie at the multiplex is based on a fairy tale, comic book or best-selling YA novel, “Snow White & the Huntsman” checks off all the boxes even if it’s none of the above as well.

Confusing? Well, the cast is clearly borne of past successful franchises, namely Kristen Stewart (have you heard of her?) coming off of “Twilight” and Chris Hemsworth dropping his Thor hammer in favor of an ax this go-round. And of course the film is inspired by one of the most cherished fairy tales of our youth. But look more closely at “SWATH” (as fans have quickly taken to calling it) and the film clearly owes more to Tolkien than to Walt Disney. And I think that’s why we’re all excited for its June 1 release. I know that’s the case for me. It doesn’t hurt that Charlize Theron looks to be chewing some scenery in a fun way with a diabolical take on the evil queen (much more fetching than the one in the cartoon of my youth, as I recall).

Tuesday night (at 7:56 p.m. on MTV & MTV.com to be precise) we’re debuting “MTV First: Snow White & the Huntsman.” As usual, we’ll be debuting a never-before-seen clip, and I’ll be sitting down with the cast (Stewart, Hemsworth, Theron and Sam Claflin, who portrays the prince in the tale) for a 30-minute interview. We taped the special a little while back, which means I can share something fun and exciting with you: Kristen Stewart’s very first participation in “After Hours.” And what better franchise to start her off on than “The Yes/No Show”?

There’s a lot more where that came from on the full show Tuesday night, including tons of insight into the filming, the actors’ takes on their iconic characters, Chris and Kristen’s weapons technique and a near-breakup fight between Kristen and me. It’s all in good fun, and we’re quite proud of it. And there’s more exciting “SWATH” news to come as I’m headed out to England later this week to reunite with the entire cast, so as always, feel free to send your questions to me @JoshuaHorowitz with the #MTVSWATH.

A Second Look
I got a chance to see “Avengers” for the second time over the weekend, this time in good old 2-D (and I’d recommend seeing it this way, by the way). And by gosh, I might have enjoyed it more the second time around. I have a bunch of conflicting feelings about the movie. After my first viewing, I was pretty convinced that while I had a great time watching it, it’s less satisfying to me than most of the previous films. If we’re looking at the recent bevy of Marvel flicks, “Captain America” is my favorite, delivering the most full-bodied experience (i.e., it’s got the cool stunts and humor but it’s also got a great character arc at its core). But a funny thing happened as “Avengers” rolled the second time around: I let go of my hang-ups with the story (er, there isn’t much of one) and I let myself fully geek out for two hours at what Joss Whedon and company expertly did: create the purest fanboy-friendly film ever made.

Check out everything we’ve got on “Snow White & the Huntsman.”

Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her ‘Crazy’ Led Zeppelin Covers

‘I’ve listened to their music since I was a child,’ says the R&B diva, who recorded ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love.’
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Larry Carroll

<P>You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin.</P><P>In early February, reports began circulating that <a href="/news/articles/1631297/mary-j-blige-records-led-zeppelins-stairway-heaven.jhtml">Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven,"</a> working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her <i>Stronger With Each Tear</i> album, due Monday.</P><P></p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float:left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:491065" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D491065" allowFullScreen="true" wmode="transparent" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p></P><P>But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering <i>another</i> Zeppelin classic &#8212; the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" &#8212; for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the <i>Essence</i> Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine.</P><P>"I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' &#8212; it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun."</P><P>Blige also said she recorded another new song &#8212; a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" &#8212; for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.</P><P>"I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.</p>

Ke$ha Drops Lil Wayne, T.I., Wiz Khalifa ‘Sleazy’ Remix

Remix also features Andre 3000 and is a bit racier than the original track.

<P>As promised, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> and her boys Lil Wayne, T.I., Wiz Khalifa and Andre 3000 dropped a new <a href="/news/articles/1672529/lil-wayne-kesha-ti-wiz-khalifa-remix.jhtml">remix of "Sleazy"</a> on Tuesday (December 13).</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="MTV News Extended Play: Ke$ha" id="id:1661961" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>The Bangladesh-produced song originally appeared on K-Dollar's 2010 <a href="/news/articles/1651081/keha-gets-sleazy-on-new-cannibal-track.jhtml"><i>Cannibal</i> album</a> before a <a href="/news/articles/1656039/andre-3000-pops-up-on-kehas-sleazy-remix.jhtml">remix featuring Andre</a> popped up earlier this year. The latest version of the song is available for purchase and is all over blogs like <a href="http://www.rap-up.com/2011/12/12/new-music-kesha-f-wiz-khalifa-andre-3000-ti-lil-wayne-sleazy-remix/" target="_blank">Rap-Up.com</a>. The song gets a bit dirtier and introspective thanks to verses from the guys that play up the track's bumping beat.</P><P>Wiz kicks it off, rapping about designer clothes and his lady love, Amber Rose. "OK, I'm young and I'm tatted/ I get them bucks like an addict/ Rocking this Christian Dior/ I spend so much on my fabric/ I got a wifey at home/ And what she wants she can have it," he spits before going on about chilling on the beach, being rich and his prowess in the bedroom.</P><P>Sitting in between Wiz and Tip is Andre's recycled verse, before T.I. gets his shot and gets sexy, asking Ke$ha, "Do you know what to do with me?" before he launches into a verse all about how good he is to the ladies. "Bad bitches know me/ So don't bother introducing me/ They want me more than diamonds," he brags before explaining that it has a lot to do with his impressive anatomy.</P><P>Wayne closes it out, adding his own signature flair. "We be on that sh– that no one be on/ That's what we on/ Smoke that neon, Kings of Leon/ Dynamite, Napoleon/ Got some skinnies and a tee on/ And some Vans," he rhymes about his famous sense of Weezy-fied style before the song circles back to the funky chorus, where Ke$ha declares that she doesn't "need you or your brand-new Benz/ Or your bougie friends/ I don't need love lookin' like diamonds/ Lookin' like diamonds."</P><P>If any of K's fans or critics were wondering if she has the swagger to chill with the guys, she displayed some of her sass when she <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/KESHASUXX" target="_blank">tweeted</a> about the remix. "Question ANIMALS … who can say they got with Lil Wayne, T.I., Andre 3000 and Wiz Khalifa on a f—ing hot track??" she asked. "ill give u one clue … Its $."</P><P><i>What do you think of the "Sleazy" remix? Tell us in the comments!</i></p>

Liam Hemsworth Rates New ‘Hunger Games’ Director Francis Lawrence

‘Catching Fire’ star calls new addition ‘really cool.’
By Jocelyn Vena

Francis Lawrence is officially on board to direct the second film in the “Hunger Games” franchise, “Catching Fire.” After Gary Ross parted with the box-office blockbuster last month, one of the film’s stars, Liam Hemsworth, is opening up about the new director, sharing that he finds the prospect of a new set of eyes on the story an exciting prospect.

“The last I heard, the new director [Lawrence] had just come on, so that’s really cool,” he told E! News over the weekend. “I’m excited about that. I think we shoot the last few months of this year. I’m really sad to see that Gary’s not going to be part of the second one. He did such an amazing job on the first.”

Hemsworth’s sentiments mirror those that co-star Josh Hutcherson shared with MTV News in late April about Lawrence joining the world of the “Hunger Games.” “Gary, I think, brought so much to the movie, and he created that whole world that was so close to the book and so perfect in so many ways that it’s going to be hard for Francis to come in, for sure,” he said. “But Francis is extremely talented, and everyone I’ve talked to says he’s the best guy in the world, so I think he’s going to bring a lot.”

Hemsworth notes that while Lawrence will be new to the team, there will be plenty of people who helped shape the first film back for round two. “I think that there’s still so many people a part of it that want the film to be great and care about it so much that they’re not going to bring the wrong person on,” he said.

Hot on the heels of those comments, screenwriter Michael Arndt is rumored to be coming on board to write the “Catching Fire” script.

The Oscar-winning writer wrote “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Toy Story 3.” The Hollywood Reporter notes that while no deal has been met yet, he would have to work to get the script done for late-summer production. Previously, Ross co-wrote the script for “Hunger Games,” and “Catching Fire” has already been drafted by “Slumdog Millionaire” writer Simon Beaufoy. Both worked with novelist Suzanne Collins.

Before the sequel goes into production, the original “Hunger Games” flick will be thrown into its first MTV Movie Awards gauntlet in June. The movie is up for eight popcorn statues including Movie of the Year, Best Cast and Best Kiss.

Leon Purvis Asks Justin Bieber to Prom, Tells THG Why

Time is running out for Leon Purvis.

The high school sophomore has made a YouTube video – viewed by over 143,000 people at last check – in which he invites Justin Bieber to his upcoming prom. But the event takes place on June 2 and Leon is yet to hear from the singing superstar.

“I want to take Justin Bieber to my 2012 prom with me as a bro because Justin Bieber deserves to have a normal night to be a normal teen at prom,” Purvis tells The Hollywood Gossip in an exclusive interview.

Describing the artist as “raw and real,” Purvis says he’s followed him since his “YouTube days,” long before he took over the music scene.

Leon says in the above video that he planned to ask a girl to also be his date. How did that turn out?

“I walk over to her I say ‘Hey I got a couple of my friends to help me spell out PROM? P is for promise you will have a good time. R is for a night you will always remember. O is for a occasion of a life time. M is for memories we will share….’”

Alas, the young lady in question told Purvis she would think about it; he left on a two-week school-sponsored trip; and returned to discover she had agreed to go with someone else. The nerve!

So what can Beliebers do to help get through to Justin? Just spread the word, he says. Spread it to EVERYONE you know.

“That would mean the world to me if they did that,” he tells THG.

Come on, Selena Gomez, you can be without your man for one evening, right?

Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Ball Kicks Off Amid Protests

Seoul, South Korea, set list heavy on new material, but Gaga’s biggest hits come out to play.
By John Mitchell

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> kicked off her hotly awaited <i>Born This Way</i> Ball at Seoul, South Korea's Olympic Stadium on Friday (April 27) in front of 45,000 fans, and despite <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-17867102" target="_blank">protests</a> from Christian groups saying Mother Monster was "obscene" and could "taint" young people with her performance, the concert appears to have gone on without incident.</P><P>Intrepid Twitter fans are already showing off pictures and video of the <i>BTW</i> Ball's enormous Gothic castle backdrop and myriad costume changes, making it clear that Gaga has outdone even her own Monster Ball in terms of spectacle.</P><P>While we wait for reviews to trickle in from halfway around the world, one thing is certain: No minors were corrupted at the show. Earlier this month, the Korea Media Rating Board decided to <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/04/02/lady-gaga-unfazed-by-south-korean-concert-age-restrictions/">elevate the age rating</a> for the concert from 12 to 18, prohibiting minors from seeing the concert. When the board notified Gaga's tour promotion company and a sponsor of the change in age restrictions, it did not offer a reason why the show &#8212; which at the time was still in rehearsals and had not been reviewed publicly &#8212; was considered unsuitable for children under 18.</P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952" width="430" height="242" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER></P><P>The likely catalyst for the board's decision came more into focus as the concert neared and protests from a group of conservative Christians calling itself the Alliance for Sound Culture in Sexuality ramped up. Though she <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/186886867118080000" target="_blank">tweeted</a> her hopes that the Korea Media Rating Board would reverse its decision (it didn't), she continued on as planned. Many fans reportedly arrived at the show wearing versions of Gaga's most well-known flamboyant costumes, and there have been no reports of disturbances at the concert.</P><P>Before the show, Gaga <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/195815732494348288" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "I can you hear you Korea. Way back in 2008, Nick Fury made a surprise appearance in a post-credit scene in the first “Iron Man” movie, and with one bold statement, he made a promise that has kept fans waiting with baited breath: “I’m here to talk to you about the Avenger Initiative.”

Fast forward four years and four more movies (“The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor” and “Captain America: The First Avenger”) and not only has Marvel delivered on their promise — they have presented us with the best Marvel movie yet.

Here are three really basic reasons why “Avengers” has excelled where some of the other Marvel movies have fallen flat:

Character Balance
It speaks volumes to Joss Whedon’s skill as a master writer/director that he managed to cram so many central characters into one story without it feeling bloated or misdirected. More importantly, every character in “Avengers” feels like they serving a purpose and aren’t just added for fan service. Compare this to the bloated roster of characters and story lines in “Iron Man 2″ or the Warrior’s Three and Sif in “Thor,” who didn’t seem to be used to their full potential.

“The Avengers” has one narrative, and each character has its own role in pushing the narrative forward. (A caveat, however: Thor definitely pulled the short straw story wise — which is surprising, considering the villain is his brother.)

Film Conflict Vs. Film Villain
Yes, Loki is the antagonist in “Avengers,” but the film’s true conflict comes from within the Avengers team. Out of all the previous Marvel movies, “Iron Man” is generally considered to be the favorite, and I would argue that this is because there is a really clear conflict and eventual resolution within the character of Tony Stark: Nobody is out there arguing that Iron Monger (Obadiah Stane) was a great cinematic villain. The other movies did their best, but always seemed to fall short when it came to realizing internal conflict.

For those of you wondering, the Avengers’ team conflict is more than just bickering. Without giving too much away, things definitely get physical between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Third Act
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been thoroughly enjoying a Marvel film, only to become bored and a little disappointed as the film winds down. Actually, I can: five times. But not so for “Avengers.” Yes, the last third is a bit of a generic smackdown in New York City, but it felt big and cinematic, and gave each of the central characters their moment to shine.

I’ll admit that the final confrontation wasn’t perfect: For one thing, the army of interdimensional invaders didn’t feel very threatening. But seeing the Avengers come together and work as a team was really what we had all showed up for in the first place. To some extent, it didn’t matter who they were fighting or what they were doing.

After four years and five movies, fans cashed in on a promise made, and it was well worth the wait.

Check out everything we’ve got on “Marvel’s The Avengers.”

Andrew Young Testifies Against John Edwards

Former aide Andrew Young, the star witness in the trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards, began his testimony against his former boss Monday.

Edwards is accused of using hundreds of thousands of dollars from 101-year-old Rachel “Bunny” Mellon and Fred Baron to conceal his affair with Rielle Hunter.

Young, testifying as the first witness Monday, said Mellon was an enthusiastic supporter who apologized for not being able to give more than $1 million.

Andrew Young and John Edwards

“She said she was close personal friends with Senators John and Bobby Kennedy and felt like Edwards was the best combination of them,” Young testified.

Prosecutors say Edwards broke federal law by accepting about $725,000 from Mellon and more than $200,000 from Fred Baron, a now-deceased Texas lawyer.

The money was used to pay for Rielle Hunter’s living and medical expenses, travel and accommodations to quash the scandal while he sought the presidency.

Edwards is accused of concealing the money from the public and the Federal Election Commission, which polices political contributions, in the 2008 campaign.

Federal prosecutors say he filed false and misleading campaign disclosure reports to do this, though Edwards denies any (legal) wrongdoing in the case.

The defense argues the money he received from Mellon and Baron was for personal reasons – to protect Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth, who was dying of cancer.

Basically, he says he did it to hide his cheating from his family, and that the donors would have given the money regardless of these rare circumstances.

Of course, by concealing it from his family, he also hid it from the public, and made a serious run at the White House in the process.

Needless to say, the John Edwards trial represents a murky legal gray area.

Young, who is married, initially claimed he was the father of Hunter’s child.

He went on to become the author of The Politician: An Insider’s Account of John Edwards’s Pursuit of the Presidency and the Scandal That Brought Him Down.

In the book, he accuses Edwards of using money from his rich benefactors to maintain his relationship with Hunter, breaking the law in the process.

Edwards admitted to his affair with Hunter in 2008, after his presidential ambitions foundered. In 2010, he admitted he was the father of Hunter’s daughter.

Ke$ha Is Channeling ‘Sexiness’ Of ’70s Rock For New Album

Glitter-heavy pop star tells MTV News she’s going for ‘balls-out, irreverent rock and roll.’
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias

<P><a href="/music/artist/_kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a>'s already got the face paint down pat, and, during recent live sets, she's even taken to <a href="http://www.popeater.com/2011/03/17/kesha-drinks-blood-during-performance" target="_blank">guzzling blood</a> out of a human heart, so it should come as no surprise that, on her upcoming album, the pop star is taking things back to the most <i>theatrical</i> era of rock: the prop-heavy, arena-spanning heyday of the 1970s. </P><P> </P><P>Ke$h revealed her plans over the weekend in Los Angeles, on the red carpet of KIIS FM's annual <a href="/news/articles/1663909/wango-tango-britney-spears-kesha.jhtml">Wango Tango</a> concert, where she told MTV News that the follow-up to her breakout <i>Animal</i> album (and, we suppose, <a href="/news/articles/1652714/kehas-cannibal-a-cheat-sheet.jhtml"><i>Cannibal</i></a> too) would be heavy on hard riffs and light on pretty much <i>everything</i> else. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Ke$ha Says New Album Will Be ' Balls-Out, Irreverent Rock'" id="vid:652875" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>"The next album … I've been working on writing on the road, but as far as a sound, I just know it's gonna be balls-out, irreverent rock and roll," she said. "I've been pretty much in this '70s rock and roll kick and I just want to capture some of the true essence of what rock and roll is, and that's just irreverence and sexiness and fun and not giving a f—, so we'll definitely put a bit of rock and roll in it." </P><P> </P><P>So, does that mean that fans can expect the likes of Alice Cooper or Peter Frampton to show up on her new album? Perhaps. Because while Ke$ha's new album is still a ways off, she's already begun calling in favors, hoping to line up a killer collabo for the new disc. </P><P> </P><P>"I'm trying, trust me," she laughed. "I really would love to connect with one of my idols, I mean, that's my dream. I'm working on it." </P><P> </P><P><i>What do you think of Ke$ha going rock for her next album? Justin Bieber Tweets Cheeky Message to Mariah Yeater

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about Mariah Yeater, the woman who claimed that Justin Bieber was her baby’s daddy. But even though we thought the scandal was behind him, it appears that Bieber had one last thing to say about it. In a tweet sent to his followers on Friday, the "Boyfriend" singer dedicated an audio clip from Borat to his 20-year-old accuser.

Britney Spears Offered $10 Million To Join ‘X Factor’

Contract could be signed as early as next week.

<P>Simon Cowell has hinted that he wants to reload the judges panel on "X Factor" with two new women and according to reports, he's close to landing a superstar who might make the second season of his talent contest much more interesting. </P><P> </P><P>While names including Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey have been bandied about as possible replacements for <a href="/news/articles/1678191/paula-abdul-exits-x-factor.jhtml">Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul,</a>&#8232; the buzz has continued to focus on <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>. A spokesperson for "Factor" could not be reached for comment at press time. </P><P> </P><P>After some major hype from Cowell, "Factor" underperformed in its first season — putting up solid numbers, but not the gaudy ones Simon had predicted. As a result, he blew up the judging panel, keeping just music executive L.A. After a few rough professional and personal years, Aguilera has gone a long way toward reclaiming her A-list status thanks to the success of her performance on "The Voice." </P><P> </P><P>Cowell reportedly reached out personally to Spears to get the conversation rolling and he's been talking her up lately, saying in that same conference call, "are we flattered there would be interest from Britney Spears? Yes." In a later interview, he said he was "fascinated" with Spears and praised her resilience after a rough period during which she endured some very public personal struggles. </P><P> </P><P>Jackson's name was in the hopper until recently, when she revealed that, while flattered by the offer, the TV gig just would not jibe with the <a href="/news/articles/1680297/x-factor-janet-jackson.jhtml">professional commitments</a>&#8232; already on her calendar this year.</p>

Robert Plant And Alison Krauss Win Grammy Album Of The Year

Raising Sand, from Led Zeppelin vet and bluegrass superstar, wins five Grammys on Sunday night.
By James Montgomery with MTV News staff

<P>"I'm bewildered," <a href="/music/artist/plant_robert/artist.jhtml">Robert Plant</a> said onstage as he accepted the <MTVNLINK type="news" id="1604580">Grammy Album of the Year award</MTVNLINK> with <a href="/music/artist/krauss_alison/artist.jhtml">Alison Krauss</a> on Sunday night. "In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday." </P><P> </P><P>He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because <i>Raising Sand,</i> which won five trophies at Sunday night's show, is in many ways the perfect <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys/">Grammy</a> album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker's dozen of time-tested standards.</p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:338316" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D338316" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>You're probably familiar with Robert Plant from his <a href="/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a> days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett's work on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don't know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she's won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history. </P><P> </P><P>Really, she's the key to <i>Sand</i>'s success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music &#8212; so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, <i>Sand</i> was released. </P><P> </P><P>And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album's finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she's getting bluesy on Little Milton's "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" or entwining with Plant's husky voice on songs like "Please Read the Letter" and Roly Salley's winsome "Killing the Blues," she more than carries her end of the bargain. </P><P> </P><P>And perhaps that's also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on <i>Sand.</i> His arrangements are sparse &#8212; giving the two voices ample room to breathe &#8212; yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It's a testament to his work that he's often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project … and it's certainly justified. </P><P> </P><P>To date, <i>Sand</i> has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year &#8212; "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. </P><P> </P><P>One expert was surprised not by the album's success, but by the fact that it's actually quite a good album. </P><P> </P><P>"At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. … Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn't have to be any good, you know?" <i>New York Times</i> music critic Jon Caramanica said. "Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really <i>good</i> record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards." </P><P></p>

HGTV, LA and Dining Room Tables

I’ve been watching a lot of HGTV since coming to LA. My favorite shows are House Hunters and House Hunters International. There’s also another show I like to watch called For Rent, but only because it makes me angry.

When it comes to apartments/homes, I think living in New York for the past eleven years has made me bitter because there was this whiny broad on For Rent a few nights ago who was looking at a huge place—A HUGE PLACE—and was like, “There’s no place for a dining room table…”

B*TCH, YOU’RE LUCKY TO GET A KITCHEN IN NEW YORK.

I hated her.

Now there’s some stupid lady on House Hunters who wants a townhouse with a fireplace that she can turn on with a light switch. IT HAS TO BE A LIGHT SWITCH because she doesn’t want to bend down and flip a switch on the floor.

WHO DO THESE PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE?

Anyway, I know my LA update is WAY overdue (and truth be told I wrote a long one last week but for some reason it didn’t save so I lost the whole thing and I was so angry that I just said, “Ah, f*ck it,” and closed the computer instead of rewriting) but to give you a quick update, I AM SO HAPPY HERE. I MEAN, I’M REALLY, REALLY HAPPY. And I think living here and watching HGTV—both of these things combined—has made me realize that New York was just beating me down. I mean, the fireplace lady—yes, she’s an idiot. But there’s nothing wrong with wanting a dining room table. Why did I get so mad at that lady?

Since being here, at least once a day I ask myself why I have lived in New York for so long. (It’s like I had Stockholm Syndrome or something.) CALIFORNIA IS AWESOME. It’s like the promised land. It’s sunny all the time and there are birds and flowers everywhere. I have space out here. I have a sofa on the patio out here. I HAVE A SOFA OUTSIDE. I haven’t seen one rat since I’ve been here. But hummingbirds? THEY ZIP BY MY HEAD EVERY DAY. I am so happy.

I’m supposed to go back to New York in November, but truth be told, I’m not sure I will.

Desperate Housewives Ratings Are Down

Whomp whomp!
Desperate Housewives ratings are down from last week, making it a terrible way to go out on the series — with falling numbers.

Captain America

Go see Captain America this weekend! Support our Colin!

I went to the premiere on Tuesday and it was the coolest thing ever. First, the movie is AMAZING and Chris Evans is a superstar. Second, there were so many damn people there it was insane. I have been to movie premieres in New York before and they were nothing like this. I mean, they closed down Hollywood Boulevard. I would’ve taken photos to show you, but the invite said to leave phones in the car. But here’s a photo of me in my cool Captain America 3D glasses:

(Sit down, stop jumping around, it’s an awesome picture, I know. And the quality is amazing. It’s not grainy or reddish… it’s perfect.) (No, it’s not.)

(And you can totally see the Captain America logo on the side of the glasses.) (No, you can’t.)

Anyway, Captain America is pulling a strong 71% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes right now so GO SEE IT! IT’S FANTASTIC!

Fun. Call ‘We Are Young’ Success ‘Weird Icing’ On Cake

Band talks to MTV News backstage at SXSW about their breakout single, which sits at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

AUSTIN, Texas — Last week, Fun. became the first rock act in nearly four years to ascend to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, as their breakout hit “We Are Young” overtook Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” as the #1 song in the country.

And while that was certainly shocking, this week Fun. proved that their success was no fluke, as “Young” remains atop the charts for a second consecutive week. And when MTV News caught up with the guys backstage at the mtvU Woodie Awards (where they’d subsequently play the song to rapturous applause), they let us in on a little secret: They can’t believe any of this is happening either.

“It’s weird. It’s amazing. Actually, the last year, ever since we started making the album Some Nights, has been a daydream that has come true,” frontman Nate Ruess said. “I mean, in 10 years of us doing this, collectively, we never thought we’d have a #1 song. Probably since we were 14 years old, we realized those type of things were impossible.”

“We thought we were too old, like, a decade ago,” guitarist Jack Antonoff laughed.

And yet, here they are, with the #1 song in the country and an album that only continues to pick up speed. And though it’s certainly a dream come true, Fun. are trying very hard to keep their heads to the ground, and push on to bigger and better things. While still remaining humble, of course.

“We’re used to being the bridesmaids, and we always wanted to be the bridesmaids, and I hope we can still continue to be the bridesmaids, it’s who we are,” Ruess said. “Any of this stuff is just some sort of weird icing on a very weird-ass cake.”

Then again, there are some definite perks to being #1 … like no longer having to engage in awkward conversations with family members. Because after a decade spent slogging it out in different bands, Fun. have finally earned the approval of the most important of critics: their parents.

“The weirdest part is our extended family now feels like we’re doing OK,” Antonoff said. “Forever our entire extended family has been like ‘Are you OK? Maybe there’s a career in management.’”

The best of the 2012 Woodie Awards will air Sunday, March 18 at 8 p.m. ET on MTV and mtvU.

‘Dark Shadows’ Trailer Divides Fans

Our columnist defends Tim Burton’s comedic re-imagining of the vampire soap.
By John Mitchell

Photo: Warner Bros

The first trailer for Tim Burton’s big-screen adaptation of the late-’60s/ early-’70s vampire soap opera “Dark Shadows” dropped Thursday, and it has sharply divided fans.

In one corner are “Shadows” purists, who seem none too pleased with the director’s decision to re-imagine the campy but deadly serious soap as a gonzo comedy. In the other corner are more casual fans and Burton enthusiasts, who are seeing shades of “Beetlejuice” and “Edward Scissorhands” and loving it.

I’m on the record as falling in the latter category. I grew up on reruns of the original soap (yeah, I was a weird kid) and also loved NBC’s short-lived prime-time reboot in the early ’90s. If the original series was a true-to-genre soap opera (just, you know, with a heavier lean on the supernatural), the ’90s take was “Melrose Place”-meets-”Twin Peaks” but with fangs. The problem is, a straight take on the original (which is where Burton’s loyalties lie — he’s never given any indication he cares about the TV reboot) wouldn’t fly with today’s sophisticated film audience, and playing to the ’90s retread would have resulted in a film that would have a lot in common with Neil Jordan’s “Interview With the Vampire.” And while that’s certainly not a bad thing — “Interview” is a killer vampire flick — it has nothing to do with Tim Burton.

For its ’90s return, “Shadows” turned up the sex factor; it was a sudsy drama with a chest-baring Ben Cross as Barnabas, Angelique busting out of her corset and a plot that focused heavily on Barnabas’ attempts to cure his vampirism so he could bring the sexytimes with Victoria Winters, whom he suspected may have been the reincarnation of Josette DuPres, the love of his mortal life back in the late 18th century.

That’s all well and good, and a big-screen treatment of that might have even played well. But that was never going to happen with Burton at the helm; it’s not his game. The dark and spooky aesthetic he created for films like “Sleepy Hollow” and “Sweeney Todd” had the look fans of the series were after, and I think that — mixed with Burton’s fanboy enthusiasm for the project — is why purists were so psyched that he was directing. But Burton doesn’t really do romance, particularly not lusty, forbidden love stories.

‘Dark Shadows’ Trailer: Love It Or Hate It? (Poll)

There are several directors who do, and who do it well, including “Shadows” star Michelle Pfeiffer’s frequent collaborator Stephen Frears (“Dangerous Liaisons,” “Cheri,” “Mary Reilly”) and “Interview” director Jordan (“The End of the Affair,” “The Crying Game”). Joe Wright (“Atonement,” “Pride and Prejudice,” the upcoming “Anna Karenina”) has practically built his career on the stuff.

But I suspect they wouldn’t have been able to grasp the weirdo wonderment that makes “Shadows” so special to fans. It’s based on a soap, after all, and is so over-the-top that to direct it as a straight romantic vampire drama might have meant significant alterations to the story to “normalize” it. It would have had to be boiled down to the basics. That still might have made for a good film, but (real talk) it also might have meant that something really dynamic would be translated into a highbrow, slightly more horror-leaning version of “Twilight.” And, um, no one wants that.

On the flip side, if Burton had kept the deliberately exaggerated and theatrical style of the original without acknowledging the comedy inherent in going so over-the-top (this is the literal definition of “camp”), it would have been unwatchably ridiculous. Soaps are absurd but play their ridiculousness with the utmost seriousness. It’s something we all know and accept about them, but it’s not something that would work, not even for a second, on the big screen — particularly in a big-budget film starring two three-time Oscar nominees (Johnny Depp and Pfeiffer), the twice-nominated Helena Bonham Carter and “Little Children” nominee Jackie Earle Haley.

The only thing left for Burton to do was turn the volume up even higher and trust his talented actors to work their magic with what better be a damn clever script. It’s hard to embrace absurdity without it coming across as farce, but you know who is a master of doing exactly that? Tim Burton. He did it in “Beetlejuice” and “Edward Scissorhands.” He even brought some genuine emotion to it with the more delicate “Ed Wood.”

It’s been a while since Burton worked this particular magic, but after seeing the “Shadows” trailer I’m feeling like he may have done it again.

Jason Russell Meltdown Caused By Exhaustion and Dehydration, Wife Claims

Kony 2012 filmmaker Jason Russell’s wife Danica is blaming her husband’s “irrational” naked public meltdown on “extreme exhaustion and dehydration.”

NOT alcohol, stunningly.

Danica Russell issued a statement addressing Jason Russell’s naked freak-out, which allegedly included vandalizing cars and masturbating in public:

“Let us say up front that Jason has never had a substance abuse or drinking problem, and this episode wasn’t caused by either of those things.”

NOTE: Wouldn’t you want to blame it on one or the other? Just to explain it away as a one-time thing, however embarrassing, and move on?

“But yes, he did irrational things brought on by exhaustion and dehydration.”

The filmmaker’s wife said the scrutiny Jason Russell received after his now-infamous film about alleged warlord Joseph Kony went viral took a toll on him.

“While the attention raised awareness about Joseph Kony, it also brought much attention to Jason – and, because of how personal the [Kony 2012] film is, many attacks against it were also very personal, and Jason took them very hard.”

Russell allegedly was walking around an intersection wearing “speedo-like underwear.” He then removed the underwear and made “sexual gestures.”

Several bystanders held Russell down until police arrived.

Police said they had received several calls about disruptions by an unidentified male, apparently Russell, though they did not publicly identify him.

“Several callers reported the male was wearing only underwear and running into the street,” said the statement released by San Diego police.

“One caller reported that the male had removed his underwear and was nude, perhaps masturbating, but that was not confirmed by responding officers.”

“The callers reported the underwear-clad male was in the street, interfering with traffic, screaming, yelling incoherently and pounding his fists on the sidewalk. Several people tried to calm the male but he continued to act in a bizarre, irrational manner.”

No charges were pending against the man, police said.

‘The Lorax’ Sweeps Box Office With $70.7M Debut

It marks the biggest debut of 2012 so far and the sixth-largest opening for an animated film.
By Ryan J. Downey

Along with its green environmental message, “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” saw a different kind of green with an estimated $70.7 million debut. Adapted from the 1971 Dr. Seuss classic, the 3-D animated flick had the biggest opening of 2012 so far.

“Project X,” the other widely released new movie, was #2 with $20.1 million. The overall box office was up 27 percent from same weekend last year.

“The Lorax” was the first animated flick to hit theaters this year that wasn’t a re-release like “Beauty and the Beast” in 3-D or the American version of Japan’s “The Secret World of Arrietty,” and its performance far exceeded industry expectations. “The Lorax” enjoyed the third-highest opening for a movie released in March (behind “Alice in Wonderland” and “300″) as well as the sixth-biggest opening for an animated feature. Its opening leapfrogged the $45 million opening of the last Dr. Seuss adaptation to hit theaters, 2008′s “Horton Hears a Who!” and overtook the previous record holder, Jim Carrey’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” “The Lorax” features the voice talents of Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Ed Helms and Danny DeVito (in the title role).

“The Lorax” was produced by Universal Pictures’ Illumination Entertainment, which was responsible for “Despicable Me” as well, for a reported $70 million. 3-D screenings accounted for about 52 percent of ticket sales, while IMAX screenings comprised roughly 8 percent. At press time, the film had a (just barely) “rotten” 57 percent Tomatometer score on “Rotten Tomatoes,” which averages reviews from film critics, but audiences who saw “The Lorax” assigned it an average CinemaScore of “A.”

“Project X” is the third found-footage-style movie this year, but the subject matter couldn’t be more different from “The Devil Inside” and “Chronicle.” A comedy about teenagers throwing a huge party, “Project X” was directed by newcomer Nima Nourizadeh and produced by Todd Phillips, the writer/director behind “The Hangover, “The Hangover Part II,” “Old School” and “Road Trip.” Way back in 2003, during a set visit to “Starsky and Hutch,” Phillips told MTV News, “We are currently working on something called ‘Project X,’ which may or may not be ‘Old School 2,’ ” which would have reunited Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn told. “Todd has a very original concept for it,” Vauhgn told MTV News. “Nothing like what you would expect.”

Eventually “Project X” evolved into something else entirely. Made for just $12 million, its debut is a respectable start for Warner Bros. Critics have not been kind, however. The Los Angeles Times’ Robert Abele wrote, ” ‘Project X’ bears a cravenly piggish attitude toward rewarding socially unacceptable behavior that feels unseemly rather than exciting, so-what rather than so-funny and obvious instead of new.”

Last weekend’s #1 movie, “Act of Valor,” retreated 44 percent to $13.7 million, coming in at #3 and bringing its total to $45.2 million. “Safe House” was #4 with $7.2 million. It joined a small handful of Denzel Washington movies in the $100 million club about $8 million ago. “Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds” rounded out the top five with $7 million for a 10-day total of $25.7 million.

Oscars darling “The Artist” enjoyed its biggest single weekend since it was released in theaters in November, bumping to 1,756 locations and earning another $3.9 million. The Best Picture winner has made $37.1 million domestically.

Do Foo Fighters Know Robert Pattinson From Robert Plant?

During band’s rehearsal break for Sunday’s Movie Awards, we put Foos to the test.
By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Jim Cantiello

<P><b>UNIVERSAL CITY, California</b> &#8212; Hard rock, heavy metal, hardcore and punk have long gone hand-in-hand with evil wizards, magic, vampires and werewolves. And with a collective sub-cultural pedigree that includes stints in the Germs, No Use for a Name, Sunny Day Real Estate, Scream and some band called Nirvana, you'd think the <a href="/music/artist/foo_fighters/artist.jhtml">Foo Fighters</a> &#8212; set to perform at Sunday's <a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/movieawards/2011/">Movie Awards</a> &#8212; would know their "Potter" from their Zeppelin. ‘Walking Dead’ Creator Explains Shocking Death

‘It would be inaccurate to portray this show as anything other than completely dangerous,’ Robert Kirkman tells MTV News.
By Josh Wigler

Warning: Major spoilers for the latest episode of “The Walking Dead” lurk ahead!

Death is par for the course on “The Walking Dead,” but that knowledge wasn’t enough to prepare for the shocking death of fan-favorite character Dale. Veteran actor Jeffrey DeMunn made his final appearance on the AMC survival horror series on Sunday night, and as is custom for the show, his exit was a gruesome one: While strolling along the quiet fields of Hershel’s farm, Dale was mortally injured by a roaming zombie and, ultimately, euthanized by a bullet to the head from antihero Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus).

“Dale’s death comes at a time where he’s very much needed,” executive producer Robert Kirkman told MTV News about the shocking decision to kill DeMunn’s character. “[Rick and the gang] are trying to make this decision on what to do with Randall. The farm is becoming increasingly dangerous. There is still tension between Rick and Shane, despite the fact that it appears that they’ve put much of their differences behind them for now. They need that moral compass [in Dale], and it’s been taken away.”

Losing Dale will have massive repercussions on the rest of the “Walking Dead” cast, Kirkman promised. Chief among those feeling the sting will be Carl (Chandler Riggs), who was partially responsible for Dale’s death. Earlier in the episode, Carl wandered into the forest by himself and taunted a seemingly immobile zombie — the very same zombie that ripped Dale’s guts out.

“It’s interesting to see Carl doing kid stuff: going out on his own, trying to prove he’s strong enough to kill a zombie, proving that he’s deserving of carrying a gun,” Kirkman said. “He instigated this whole situation. We’re going to deal with his emotions and what comes from him causing Dale’s death to a certain extent. That’s definitely one of the big repercussions where Dale’s death affects these characters.”

Once again, Dale’s death proves that the “Walking Dead” TV series is more than willing to deviate from the “Walking Dead” comic books. In Kirkman’s comics, Dale survives dozens and dozens of issues before finally succumbing to a fatal zombie bite. Seeing the popular character leave the show so soon is bound to be a shock for longtime fans then — but that wasn’t the only kind of shock value Kirkman and company were aiming for.

“One of the things we wanted to do is show how dangerous these zombies actually are,” Kirkman said. “We were sitting around the writers’ room early on in the planning of season two, and we thought, you know, there aren’t a lot of zombies actually succeeding in what they’re trying to do. They eat people here and there, but we’ve never really had a zombie actually take down one of our main characters — at least not for a while, not since the first season. We wanted to remind people how dangerous these creatures are. It also threw a wrench in everyone’s plans to take Dale off the table, so those two ideas merged into one until we eventually came to offing this character.”

Fans aren’t just losing Dale, of course: they’re also losing DeMunn, one of the finest actors “The Walking Dead” has to offer. Taking an actor of such high caliber off the playing field is not something the “Dead” team treated lightly, Kirkman said.

“It’s a tremendous loss,” he admitted. “It’s difficult. It’s difficult for the cast, because they’ve become pretty much a family hanging out in rural Georgia. They keep each other company. It’s definitely a big deal [losing Jeffrey]; it sucks for everybody. Jeffrey in particular brought a serious sense of gravitas to the role and definitely legitimized this show by gracing us with his presence. We were lucky to get an actor of his caliber. He added a lot to the show, and his presence is definitely going to be missed.

“But,” Kirkman added, “this is ‘The Walking Dead.’ It would be inaccurate to portray this show as anything other than completely dangerous, and in order to do that, you have to lose characters from time to time.”

Were you shocked by Dale’s death? Tell us what you think in the comments or let me know on Twitter @roundhoward.

Grammys Flashback: That Happened Last Year

From Lady Gaga’s egg to Katy Perry’s wedding video, plenty of crazy went down at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards.
By John Mitchell

Lady Gaga arrives at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards

<P>The 54th annual <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys/">Grammy Awards</a> are just a day away and everyone in the MTV Newsroom is starting to get excited. Will <a href="/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;"</a> show up? How will <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/adele/artist.jhtml">Adele</a> sound in her first major live performance since undergoing surgery to repair a vocal cord hemorrhage? What color will <a href="/music/artist/perry_katy/artist.jhtml">Katy Perry"</a>'s hair be? What will <a href="/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga"</a> wear? We can't wait to find out. But if last year's show is any indication, it's safe to say that just about anything could happen at Los Angeles' Staples Center on Sunday night. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:621416.id:1657665" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The quirk factor was high at <a href="/news/articles/1657879/grammy-awards-arcade-fire-lady-antebellum.jhtml">last year's Grammys</a>, and it got started long before a single award was handed out. Lady Gaga's red carpet arrival inside of a pearlescent egg carried by four scantily clad dudes wearing prosthetics on their faces and shoulders should have been reminder enough that the unusual is the norm at the Grammys. But in case it wasn't, the show itself delivered Muppets and Katy Perry on a swing. We've rounded up five big moments from last year's show to remind you why the Grammys are the craziest awards show of the year. <b>&#187; Lady Gaga arrives in that freakin' egg, er, "vessel."</b><br> Never one to just casually stroll the red carpet in a pretty dress, Lady Gaga went to great lengths to make every element of her Grammy appearance part of a larger art piece that culminated in the performance of her then-new single "Born this Way." It all started on the red carpet, when she arrived already inside her <a href="/news/articles/1657833/lady-gaga-grammy-arrival-egg.jhtml">"vessel,"</a> later claiming to Jay Leno that she'd been in a state of artistic incubation inside it for 72 hours. (Did you just roll your eyes? We think you just rolled your eyes!) The pop star emerged to deliver a full-voiced &#8212; if otherwise joyless &#8212; performance of the song, which at the time was drawing <a href="http://www.popeater.com/2011/02/11/lady-gaga-born-this-way-madonna-express-yourself/" target="_blank">heavy criticism</a> for sounding maybe a little <i>too</i> much like <a href="/news/articles/1657803/lady-gaga-born-this-way-madonna.jhtml">Madonna's 1989 classic "Express Yourself,"</a> and went on to score three Grammys, including Best Pop Vocal Album for <i>The Fame Monster</i>. <b>&#187; Did Christina Aguilera fall down after that showstopping Aretha Franklin tribute?</b><br> Last year's ceremony kicked off with an <a href="/news/articles/1657852/christina-aguilera-jennifer-hudson-aretha-franklin-grammy-tribute.jhtml">Aretha Franklin tribute</a> featuring Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Florence Welch, Martina McBride and Yolanda Adams. The ladies delivered a rousing group performance of "(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman" before launching into solos of "Ain't No Way," "Until You Come Back to Me," "Think," "Respect" and "Spirit in the Dark" and closing with "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves" &#8212; tearing the roof off the Staples Center. Except all anyone wanted to talk about afterward was how Christina maybe slipped a little in her towering heels. The performance came just one week after Xtina botched "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XLV (luckily, <a href="/news/articles/1678621/kelly-clarkson-national-anthem-super-bowl-46.jhtml">Kelly Clarkson's rendition</a> this year went smoothly), and it seemed like the "Beautiful" singer and "Voice" judge had fully redeemed herself after the debacle, delivering a fantastic vocal performance … until she stumbled onstage, sending <a href="http://www.popeater.com/2011/02/14/christina-aguilera-grammys-stumble/" target="_blank">gossips</a> into a tizzy that the singer may have been, we'll say, out of sorts during the performance despite much evidence to the contrary. Or maybe people just like a good near-fall? People get very excited when an entertainer loses her footing &#8212; <a href="/news/articles/1678570/madonna-super-bowl-halftime-fumbles.jhtml">don't they, Madonna?</a> Anyway, while everyone tried to make Xtina's mini-tumble a bigger story than it was, the ladies earned a richly deserved standing ovation for their tribute to Franklin, who was rather ill at the time but has since recovered, lost a bunch of weight, gotten engaged and ended that engagement. (A year in Hollywood time is like five years in normal person time … maybe that's why everyone is so afraid of getting older!) <b>&#187; Bieber performs big, loses Best New Artist to unknown jazz bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding.</b><br> Justin Bieber's medley performance began with an acoustic strum through "Baby" but quickly segued into a raucous take on "Never Say Never," complete with breakdancing ninja acrobats, fire breathers and a cameo rap by "Karate Kid" star Jaden Smith. Biebs' mentor Usher even joined in on the fun for a pop-and-lock-heavy dance-off to his hit "OMG." But the <i>real</i> story with Bieber at last year's Grammys was that he lost. To Esperanza Spalding. A critically acclaimed but otherwise unknown jazz performer. Bieber didn't take the loss so well but his fans went even crazier, expressing the profound sadness they felt and bearing witness to their idol's defeat by hacking Spalding's Wikipedia page and changing her middle name to both "Justin" and "Quesadilla." One <a href="http://www.popeater.com/2011/02/14/esperanza-spalding-justin-bieber/" target="_blank">fan wrote</a>, "Justin Bieber deserved it go die in a hole. Who the heck are you anyway?" while another scribbled, "So the Esperanza Spalding has only 8 thousand followers on twitter and how many does Justin Bieber has?" It seems someone forgot to tell the Belieber army that the Grammys are not a popularity contest (well, they're not <i>supposed</i> to be, anyway) and that one's amount of Twitter followers is not taken into account when deciding the winners. Duly noted! <b>&#187; Katy Perry performed the ballad "Not Like the Movies" while on a swing, playing video from her wedding to Russell Brand.</b><br> If you needed further proof that <i>a lot</i> can change in just a single year, look no further than Katy Perry's performance at last year's ceremony. Much like she did on her California Dreams Tour, Perry performed her ballad "Not Like the Movies" while sitting on a swing as video from her elaborate <a href="/news/articles/1657862/katy-perry-grammy-performance.jhtml">October 2010 wedding to Russell Brand</a> was projected behind her. Though one would think a sweet performance like Katy's would shut the gossip mill down for at least a little while, the couple was already back to defending their strange union less than two months later when Brand co-hosted "Live!" with Kelly Ripa. By year's end, Perry and Brand's marriage was <a href="/news/articles/1676630/russell-brand-katy-perry-divorce.jhtml">officially no more</a>, and it made re-watching her performance from last year for the purposes of this article, um, kind of awkward. <b>&#187; Cee Lo performed "Forget You" with a bunch of Muppets (and Gwyneth Paltrow). </b><br> No, no one at your Grammy party spiked your drink. Cee Lo Green, wearing a crazy red bear suit and a rainbow fan of feathers (think peacock), really did perform his Grammy-nominated smash <a href="/news/articles/1657860/cee-lo-gwyneth-paltrow-grammy-performance.jhtml">"Forget You"</a> backed by a bunch of singing and dancing Muppets while Oscar-winning home health guru Gwyneth Paltrow writhed atop his piano. Oddly, the whole thing worked like gangbusters and was a big old ball of fun. (And when was the last time anyone associated the word "fun" with Gwyneth Paltrow? Such is the funky power of Cee Lo.) This year's show has the potential to outdo last year's in the water-cooler department with Rihanna and Chris Brown both set to perform under the same roof for the first time since, well, you know … in addition to plenty of interesting collabos, including a special electronic dance music performance set to feature the Foo Fighters (right?), and whatever Lady Gaga decides to get into. <i>What are you most looking forward to at this year's Grammys? Lady Gaga’s Path To Album Of The Year Race

MTV News looks back on Mother Monster’s huge year and her genre-busting, Grammy-nominated album.

<P>Some artists, like <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/adele/artist.jhtml">Adele</a>, release albums that are pure <a href="/news/articles/1678825/grammy-2012-album-of-year-adele-profile.jhtml">Grammy catnip</a> thanks to instant-classic sounds that resonate with the Recording Academy's way-back contingent. Then there's Lady Gaga. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:717202" width="240" height="211"></div><p> She's been a bridesmaid twice for Album of the Year at the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys">Grammys</a>, losing out on her first two releases. But with her third bid on Sunday, for <a href="/news/articles/1664105/lady-gaga-born-this-way-stream.jhtml"><i>Born This Way,</i></a> Gaga appears to have made the kind of career-defining, big-idea album that Grammy voters could not deny. It had all the things the Academy loves in an Album of the Year nominee: ambition, deeply personal tracks that provide a glimpse at the artist's psyche, bold musical explorations, strong sales and chance to prove that they're hip enough to get what the kids are listening to. (Or, in some cases, a new album by Steely Dan.) And, indeed, BTW <i>did</i> have it all, from the jackhammer electronica of "Marry the Night" to the tango-lite grooves of "Americano," the techno attack of "Heavy Metal Lover," hints of biography in "Hair," the lighter-raising ballads in "Yo&#252; and I" and "The Edge of Glory" and, of course, the title track, which served as both a dance-floor phenomenon <i>and</i> an <a href="/news/articles/1657772/lady-gaga-born-this-way.jhtml">empowerment anthem</a> for the ages. The album, one of the most anticipated of 2011, not only <a href="/news/articles/1664888/lady-gaga-billboard.jhtml">crashed the charts</a> with stellar sales figures of more than one million in its first week, but it also managed to once again bend the will of the music-buying public to meet her quirky, unpredictable muse. Gaga promised her fans that she was pouring everything she had into the disc and when it arrived, complete with a series of trippy, <a href="/news/articles/1663387/lady-gaga-judas-video.jhtml">provocative videos</a> that also pushed the envelope, they couldn't have asked for any more from their Mother Monster. Frequent musical collaborator producer Fernando Garibay said the recognition from the Recording Academy was a nice cherry-topper to a year of hard, hard work. "We worked on this album for so long and it was like our baby so it was more about if the fans would love it; that was the most important thing.," he told MTV News. "But of course, nominations, yeah, that's cool." </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:732837.id:1678680" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The first full-length effort from Gaga since her rise to international stardom, <i>Born This Way</i> allowed the singer to exorcise some demons, comment on her newfound fame and, of course, create the kind of over-the-top tracks that would lend themselves to equally eye-popping live performance. "This album was the most personal, the amount of detail that went into this record, the amount of passion and emotion from her and the team," Garibay said. "We all followed her lead on this, on every song … how intense every avenue of making this record was for us, protecting the record, creative, conceptually, every song was a story towards the <i>Born This Way</i> theme." The video for the title track took the Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. In a year in which she kept turning heads with ever-more-insane red carpet walks, Gaga fittingly raised the bar further at the show, where she performed and accepted the Female Video Moonman as her male <a href="/news/articles/1669863/lady-gaga-best-female-video-vmas.jhtml">alter ego, Jo Calderone</a>. In between those appearances, Gaga also managed to circle the globe with the Broadway-worthy <a href="/news/articles/1664768/lady-gaga-semi-precious-weapons-monster-ball.jhtml">Monster Ball Tour</a>, on which she brought the new songs to life every night in a spectacle that was the visual equal of her studio experiments. Though she worked with her core team, which includes Garibay, producer RedOne and DJ White Shadow, Gaga also opened the doors to collaborations with late Bruce Springsteen saxophonist Clarence Clemons and classic rock producer <a href="/news/articles/1669108/lady-gaga-you-and-i-music-video-premiere.jhtml">Robert "Mutt" Lange</a> and Queen guitarist Brian May, who helped give "Yo&#252; and I" its epic, AM radio majesty. Gaga was so excited to record the album that she insisted on having a portable studio with her at all times to work on new music even as she toured the world for <i>The Fame Monster,</i> RedOne said. The road work paid off, as the album has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, spinning off a bevy of hits, including the title track, "Marry the Night," "Judas," "Yo&#252; and I" and "The Edge of Glory." And though he's been there before, RedOne added that getting another nod for the biggest Grammy honor of all is new every time. "It's an amazing thing to be nominated for the biggest thing in music industry," he said. "It's always a big honor. I get happy and I never want to get used to it." <b>Chaos! Profanity! Rick Ross’ ‘Pen Is Sharp Right Now,’ Prodigy Says

‘He’s killin’ ‘em right now with the lyrics,’ P tells MTV News about Ricky Rozay’s songwriting skills.

Mobb Deep‘s Prodigy knows a thing or two about quality rap lyrics. In the mid-1990s, P and his partner Havoc built their reputation off of a unique brand of murderous music that consisted of menacing beats and well-thought-out street poetry. It’s a quality that Prodigy looks for in would-be Mobb Deep collaborators and a quality he sees in MTV News’ Hottest MC in the Game crown holder Rick Ross.

“I’ve learned to respect Rick Ross’ music. He’s been impressing me lately, especially while I was locked up. I’ve been watching his career,” Prodigy told MTV News of his growing appreciation for the Miami rapper. “At first on some real sh–, I thought he was a fluke. I didn’t think he was gonna make it and I can admit that. I’m not scared to speak my mind and tell you what it is. And now I’m like, ‘I like that kid.’ ”

After his 2006 gun arrest, Prodigy was sentenced to three and a half years in jail in October 2007. At the time, Ross was in between albums, preparing to release his sophomore LP Trilla, and he wasn’t quite the rap juggernaut that he is today. By the time P was released in March 2011, Rozay had made significant strides in his career and the Mobb Deep lyricist became a fan. “He’s real unique, he’s real creative, he picks ill beats. He impresses me,” P said. “He’s killin’ ‘em right now with the lyrics. His pen is sharp right now. That boy’s pen is not a joke right now.”

Ross shares a mutual admiration. “When he was released [from prison], he gave me a call a few days after that. We spoke on the phone maybe once or twice. It was a genuine conversation, us touching base, making sure it is what it is. We most definitely put a record or two on the table,” Ross told Sway of Prodigy when he appeared on “RapFix Live” in May 2011.

Prodigy also revealed to MTV News last year that the record was already finished and will most likely appear on the next Mobb Deep full-length LP.
